Cusco, the most impressive city in Peru, the citylying on over 3500m was already founded by the Incas. Some of these basic constructions can still be found in the city today. Due to Machu Picchu, of course, the most touristic city in the country. But there is always a way to escape of this.

After the first rather cozy days in Cusco, it was time to explore the area outside the old town. The goal was to reach the salt fields of Maras, less than 2 hours by public transport from Cusco. The last part was a 4 kilometer hike through the overgrown fields of Maras. When the canyon with the salt fields was reached a picture was offered that I had never seen before. The salty white stands in heavy contrast to the barren red-brown-green landscape.

After a short trip to Uribamba and back in Cusco, it was time to prepare for the 5-day hike over the Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu.
