I arrived on time at the quite small airport of Varadero. After answering some questions I got through passport control and could get my luggage. Outside was Ariel already waiting, my Airbnb host for the next two days. His friend drove us to Matanzas. Ariel’s house is in a typical cuban neighborhood.

Just after I arrived at the apartment I walked all the way to the center of Matanzas, around 6km. As I got there I could change some of my Pesos Convertible CUC to Cuban Pesos (CUP). 1 CUC is one USD and 1 CUP around 5 cents. Then I got my first Mojito for 4 CUC, it was delicous. When it got dark I took a taxi for 5 CUC back to my apartment. My plan was to take a shower and go to bed. But there was a friend of Ariel from Canada visiting and a kids birthday party next door with loud music. We got also invited to have a piece of the cake. So after some celebrations and a beer from a small local market for 1 CUC, I finally went to bed around 1030pm.

On the second day I walked down to the main street. There is a bus stop and some small shops and restaurants. I got me a papaya-coconut juice for 3 CUP / 5 cents and a small pizza margarita for 15 CUP / 75 cents. That one wasn’t even that bad. I also reserved my bus to Habana for tomorrow, this one takes me to the capital of Cuba for 7 CUC.
