Mit Balta und seinem Pick-up War ein Ausflug auf den Vulkan Santa Ana geplant. Zu fünft fuhren wir gehen 9 Uhr los. Doch auf dem Weg gaben plötzlich die vorderen Bremsen ihren Dienst auf. So musste wir eine Werkstatt aufsuchen. Die nächsten 3 Stunden warteten wir also darauf bist die Bremsen am Strassenstrand gwechselt wurden. Unterhaltsam aber auch sehr heiss. Danach folgte dann die Abkühlung in nahegelegenen See, mit dem Vulkan wirds wohl dann einer ander Mal klappen.
With Balta and his pick-up we planned a trip to the volcano Santa Ana. The five of us left around 9 o’clock. But on the way suddenly the front brakes gave up their service. So we had to visit a mechanic. So we waited for the next 3 hours, till the brakes were changed on the road. Entertaining but also very hot. Then followed by the cooling down in the nearby lake, with the volcano will probably then fold another time.

An diesem Morgen wachte ich neben Mila Kunis auf, es handelte sich aber nicht um die berühmte Schauspielerin, sondern um eine Holländerin mit was exakt gleichem Namen.
This morning I woke up next to Mila Kunis, but it was not the famous actress, but a Dutch woman with exactly the same name.

In San Gil traff ich auf einen Laden mit meinem Namen. Verkauft wird hier Spielzeug, Geschenkartikel und Schulmaterial. Ebenfalls scheint es eine Art Reisebüro zu sein. Porqué no?

Unsere Busfahrt von Bogotá nach Armenia war neben der wunderbaren Aussicht und dem köstlichen Mittagessen auch wegen des Bustyps sehr speziell. Es handelte sich offensichtlich um einen Mustang, oder etwa nicht?
Our bus ride from Bogotá to Armenia was very special in addition to the wonderful view and the delicious lunch also because of the bus type. It was obviously a Mustang, wasn’t it?

Beim Buswechsel mitten in Costa Rica traff ich zu meiner Überraschung am der Haltestelle auf eine komplette koreanische Reisegruppe, welche ebenfalls auf den selben Bus wartete. Scheinbar haben die eine eher günstige Tour gebucht.
When changing buses in the middle of Costa Rica, I met to my surprise at the stop a complete Korean tour group, which also waited for the same bus. Apparently they have booked a rather cheap tour.

Als Fabian Dolder auf Besuch war in Nicaragua nahm ich in mit zum Coiffeur, ich kannte den Besitzer bereits und nun ist er umgezogen in etwas grössere Räumlichkeiten wie er mir damals sagte. Als wir am neuen Standort eintrafen stellen wir fest das er nun auf einem Aussen-Autowaschplatz Haare schneidet.
When Fabian Dolder visited Nicaragua, I took him to the hairdresser, I already knew the owner and now he moved to a larger space, as he told me then. When we arrived at the new location, we noticed that he now cuts hair on an old outdoor car wash spot.

Auf dem Weg von Somoto nach Matagalpa hätten wir in Esteli über zwei Stunden auf die nächste Verbindung warten müssen, so entschieden wir uns fürs hitchhiken. Nach nem Bus aus der Stadt raus und dem ersten Pick-up landeten wir in einem kleinen Ort mitten im Nirgendwo. Die nächste Mitfahrgelegenheit toppte dann alles und wird wohl so schnell nicht zu überbieten sein. Doch seht selbst.
On the way from Somoto to Matagalpa we would have had to wait over two hours for the next bus connection in Esteli, so we decided to hitchhike. After a bus out of the city and the first pick-up we landed in a small town in the middle of nowhere. The next ride topped everything and will probably not be beaten in the close future. But see for yourself.

In Las Peñitas neben dem Hostel hatte es eine Eisdiele, für Nicaragua aber teuer und nicht allzu speziell. Da blieb die Kundschaft auch eher fern und der Besitzer wirkte oft sehr gelangweilt. Speziell in diesem Foto.
In Las Peñitas next to the hostel there was an ice cream shop but for Nicaragua it was expensive and not too special. Since the clientele also rather stayed away and the owner was often very bored. Especially in this photo.

Auf Big Corn Island übernachtet wir im sogenannten Silver Sand Hotel, es handelte sich aber eher un eine Farm als ein Hotel. Doch neben den eher sporadischen Zimmer hat uns dafür der Strand nebenan voll überzeugt. Auch nicht zu vernachlässigen waren die vielen Iguanas auf den Geländen. Die zwei grössten Männchen nannte der Besitzer liebevoll Donald Trump und Kim Jong-Un.
On Big Corn Island we stayed at the so-called Silver Sand Hotel, but it was more of a farm than a hotel. But in addition to the rather sporadic rooms, the beach next door has convinced us. Also not to be neglected were the many iguanas on the grounds. The owner named the two largest males Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un.

Dank Airbnb übernachteten wir anstelle in einem 60 Dollar/Nacht Haus in einem für 200.- Dollar die Nacht. Und dies mit guten Verhandlungskünsten für gesamthaft vier Nächte. Gekostet hat es schliesslich pro Person nicht viel mehr als ein Hostel. Meerblick, Terasse und Pool inklusive!
Thanks to Airbnb, we spent some nights instead of in a $ 60 / night house in one for $ 200 a night. And this with good negotiating skills for a total of four nights. After all, it did not cost much more per person than a hostel. Sea view, terrace and pool included!

Uns wurde gesagt das Pancho einen Microbus hat und er uns damit günstig bis an die Playa Guasacaste fährt. Doch mit Micro war auch wirklich Micro gemeint. Sieben Leute, zwei Surfbretter, viele Einkäufe und noch mehr Gepäck, gepasst hat es aber trotzdem.
We were told that Pancho has a microbus and he drives us cheap to the Playa Guasacaste. But with Micro was really synonymous Micro meant. Seven people, two surfboards, many purchases and even more luggage, but it has fit anyway.

Ein weiteres Chickenbus Highlight von Nicaragua folgte schneller als Gedacht beim Busbahnhof in Rivas wurde unser Bus mit einem lebendigen Schwein beladen. Auf dem Dach angeschnürrt reiste dieses mit. Laut und wild hat sich dieses dagegen gewehrt, verständlich, entspricht ja nicht wirklich den Tierschutzgesetzen wie wir sie kennen.
Another Chickenbus highlight from Nicaragua followed faster than thought at the bus station in Rivas, our bus was loaded with an aive pig. This was placed on the roof. Loud and wild, this has resisted, understandable, does not really correspond to the animal welfare laws as we know them.

Ein Grenzübergang in Europa ist ja eine sehr seriöse Angelegenheit, in Zentralamerika kann es gut möglich sein das man frei umherlaufende Kühe antrifft. Ob die wohl ihren Pass dabei haben?
A border crossing in Europe is a very serious matter, in Central America, it may well be possible that one encounters free circulating cows. Whether they have their passport?

Während meiner Zeit im Alton’s Divecenter auf Utila schlossen 4 Divemaster ihre Ausbildung ab. Und wurden in Taucher Tradition mit einer letzten Prüfung gefordert, dem sogenannten Snorkeltest. So musste ein Bier durch die Tauchmaske bzw. Nase getrunken werden sowie ein alkoholisches Mixgetränk durch den Snorkel. Auch weitere anspruchsvolle Aufgaben mussten gelöst werden. Ein sehr unterhaltsamer Abend, den ich so nicht erwartet hätte.
During my time at Alton’s Divecenter on Utila, 4 Divemasters completed their training. And diver tradition has been demanded with a final test, the so-called snorkel test. So a beer had to be drunk through the diving mask or nose and an alcoholic mixed drink through the snorkel. Even more challenging tasks had to be solved. A very entertaining evening that I did not expect.

An meinem ersten Abend in Honduras wurde ich zu einem Pokerturnier eingeladen. Gespielt wurde um echtes Geld. Der Einsatz war 40 Lempiras. Zu meiner Überraschung gewann ich und war dann Besitzer von 200 ein Lempira Noten.
On my first evening in Honduras, I was invited to a poker tournament. It was played for real money. The bet was 40 Lempiras. To my surprise I won and was then owner of 200 one Lempira bills.

Da mein 90 Tage Visa für den C-4 Staatenbund auslief musste ich in El Salvador dieses verlängern. Dafür verlangte das Immigrationsbüro ein paar Unterlagen, unteranderem auch aktuelle Passfotos. So machte ich mich auf den Weg in ein Fotostudio in Santa Ana um diese zu erstellen. Eine lustige Erfahrung, etwas anders als bei uns. Ging aber ganz fix und gekostet hat es nur Fr. 3.75.
As my 90-day visa for the C-4 league ended, I had to extend this in El Salvador. For that the immigration office demanded a few documents, among other also current passport photos. So I went to a photo studio in Santa Ana to create those. A fun experience, something different from ours. Went quite tight and it cost only 3.75 USD.

Wenn zwei belgische Gäste des Hostel zum Lunch mit einem Local in Antigua eingeladen, welchen Sie druch eine Bekanntschaft von Zuhause kennen, meint man das ein nichts aussergewönliches. Doch als Sie danach erzählen das er der Besitzer von Zacapa Ron ist und somit einer der bekanntesten und reichsten Personen von Guatemala siehts ganz anders aus.
If two Belgian guests of the hostel are invited for lunch with a local in Antigua because they have the same friends in Belgium. It’s not that special. However, when they then tell that it was the owner of Zacapa Ron, one of the best-known and richest people of Guatemala it looks quite different.

Wenn du auf einem 6-Tages Jungletrek bist um die grössten Maya Ruinen der Welt zu endecken, bist du sehr überrascht wenn dich eine guatemalische Archäologin auf Deutsch mit schweizer Akzent über den aktuellen Stand der Ausgrabungen informiert.
If you are on a 6-day jungletrek around the largest Mayan ruins of the world to discover them, you are very surprised when you a guatemalian archaeologist informs you in german with a swiss accent on the current state of the excavations.

Ich war bereits schon über einen Monat auf der Farm als wir eines Tages feststellten das sich die eine Hündin der drei Hunde auf der Farm anders verhält. Mit erstaunen sahen wir das diese Schwanger war und zwei Tage später gabs auch schon Nachwuchs. Sieben kleine Welpen, eine Mischung zwischen Huskey & Windhund waren geboren. So süss.
I have already been over a month on the farm when we one day realized that one of the three dogs on the farm acts different. We saw that it was pregnant and two days later it already gave birth. Seven small puppies, a mixture between huskey & greyhound were born. So sweet.

Während eines schweren Regenschauers auf Caye Caulker verwandelte sich der Garten meines Hostel in einem See, so dass ich für eine Nacht einen Schlafsaal mit Seeblick hatte.
During a heavy rain on Caye Caulker the backyard of my hostel startet to turn into a lake, so I had a dorm with lake view for one night.

Eigentlich wollten wir uns ein schönes Abendessen im argentischen Steakhouse gönnen als wir in Tulum waren. Doch nachdem wir bestellten fing es jedoch stark an zu regnen, und da das Restaurant mehr oder weniger gar nicht überdacht war, war dieses innerhalb weniger Minuten komplett nass und wir mussten uns fast in der Küche in Deckung begeben. Als der Regen nachliess entschieden wir uns das ganze zu vergessen und suchten uns ein trockenes Örtchen für unser Abendessen.
Actually, we wanted to trat us with a nice dinner in an Argentinian Steakhouse as we were in Tulum. However after we ordered, it startet to rain strongly, and because the restaurant more or less does nort have a roof, it was within a few minutes completely wet and we had to rescue us almost in the kitchen to stau dry. When the rain subsided we decided to forget about and searched us a dry place for our dinner.

The first marriage proposal in which I was a witnessed and this on a 3976m high volcano shortly after sunrise. The women only could say Yes!

Als es hiess das man am Schluss des Shuttletransport noch ein Boot nehmen muss, rechnet man nicht mit sowas. Umso intressanter, dass dann ebenfalls der Fährenmann noch mit zwei parkierten Militärbooten kollidierte. Der Armeestützpunkt Chef war dann aber ganz locker und nach kuzer Pause ging die Fahrt auch weiter.
As they sad that we have too take a boat at the end of the shuttle transport to get to the final destination, you would expect this. Even more exciting that the ferry driver chrashed into two parked army boats on the way. Then the army base boss had to come to check the damage, but he was easy going and after short break we contunied without any futher troubles.

When next to you in the Collectivo Taxi a cardboardbox is which is not as normal as you thought. And you realize that when it starts to move and make noizes.

Wenn andere Gäste des Hostels fischen gehen kann es gut sein das du dann plötzlich einen riesen Amber Jack in der Hand hälst. Geschmeckt hat er hervorrangend.
When other hostel guests went fishing it’s possible that you hold a huge Amber Jack afterwards. And it was delicous too!

Wir waren unterwegs auf einer Sandbank und ein Boot fährt vorbei. Der Plan ging auf und wir durften mitfahren. Doch nicht wie gedacht im Boot sondern dahinter. Kayaken mal anders!
Walking on a sandbar and a boat drives by. Our plan worked out and we got a ride. But instead of in the boat we were behind the boat. Kayaking simply diffrent.

That’s how you exchange 60 Cuban Dollars, if there is no mexican Pesos avaiable at the airport in La Habana.

Mit einem kubanischen Mitfahrgelegenheit welches uns als offizielles Taxi verkauft wurde gings am späteren Nachmittag von Holguin nach Santa Clara. Um die 6 Stunden sollte die Fahrt dauern. Nach knapp der Hälfte der Strecke, tauchte ein komisches Geräusch auf. Der Fahrer hielt nach einiger Zeit an und checkte den Motor sowie die Vorderachse.. nicht endeckt. Dann gings weiter und das Geräusch war immer noch da. Ein weiteres mal wurde angehalten und genauer nachgeschaut. Als das vordere linke Rad demontiert war, wurde der Fehler schnell gefunden und behoben. Eine Schraube des Bremssattels hat sich gelöst. Nach einem Abendessen und knapp 45 minütiger Pause gings dann weiter.
With a cuban taxi ride which they sold us as a official taxi, we left Holgin late afternoon to Santa Clara. Around 6 hours should the ride take. After nearly half of the route, appeared a comical noise. The driver stopped after after a while and checked the engine as well as the front axle, but he didn’t see anything unusual. So we went further and the noise was still there. Once more he stopped and more accurately looked up. After the front left wheel was dismantled, the error was quickly found and corrected. A screw of the breaks was loose. After a short dinner and a nearly 45 minute break we continue our journey.

Wie überall wird auch ich Kuba täglich jemand ein Jahr älter. Bei meinem ersten Tag in Kuba wurde ich auch einen Kindergeburtstag eingeladen.
As everywhere, there also a birthday in Cuba everyday. And I funny it sounds I got invited to a kids birthday on my first day in Cuba.

Auf meinem Flug von Island nach Toronto hatte wir einen sehr prominenten Herren an Board. Er ist auf der ganzen Welt bekannt und macht jährlich Millionen von Kindern glücklich. Dank dem Foto hier sollte in jeder erkennen.
