Es ist schon über zwei Monate her als mein Kuba Abenteuer endete. Zeit auf meine vier Wochen in Kuba zurück zu blicken.
Durch Kuba zu reisen war nicht immer einfach, teilweise auch eher teuer, im Verhältnis zum Einkommen eines Kubaners. Es wird deutlich das der Staat hier mit dem Tourismus viel Geld verdient. Doch dieses Geld ist auch notwendig, den neben Zuckerrohr, Rum & Tabak gibt es in Kuba nicht viele Exportschlager. Ebenfalls müssen viele Produkte des täglichen Bedarf importiert werden. Viele Elektrogeräte aus China, teilweise auch verpackte Lebensmittel wie Thunfisch und Noodelsuppen. Lebensmittel aus Spanien findet man ebenfalls oft in den zahlreichen Lebensmittelländen. Doch die Vielzahl an Läden macht das einkaufen nicht einfacher, eher komplizierter. Denn diese haben oft nur wenige Produkte und so gut wie nie Frischprodukte. Wenn mal also Gemüse, Früchte, Käse, Eier oder Fleisch einkaufen möchte muss man dies auf den Märkten und den Strassenständen tun. Was man jedoch in Kuba immer und einfach findet sind Rum, Bier & Zigarren.
Doch trotz diesen Hürden findet mal sich nach einiger Zeit gut zurecht und erkennt das auch die guten Strassenimbisse und Restaurants. So ist mit zum Beispiel während meiner letzten Tage in Habana das Café Baracoa aufgefallen, welches jeweils nur Mittags geöffnet hatte. Dort habe ich dann an meinem zweitletzten Tag in Kuba mittaggegessen und es war super lecker. Kostet hat eine grosse Portion Reis mit Gemüse, Schweinefleisch, Kartoffeln und Gurken nur Fr. 1.20
Zurückblickend würde ich sagen war es gut das ich mein Latinamerika Abenteuer in Kuba gestartet habe. Es war sicherlicher ein Sprung ins kalte Wasser, denn backpacken in Kuba ist nicht einfach, ohne grosse Spanischkenntnisse sowiso. Doch ich hatte auch Glück, denn ich traff tolle Menschen mit welchen ich viele meiner Eindrücke teilen konnte. Die wertvollsten Bekanntschaften waren meine beiden Travelbuddies Brandon & Kevin aus Kanada, mit welchen ich fast zwei Wochen quer durch Kuba reiste. Wir fuhren zusammen Zug, Kutsche, Motorradtaxi, Lastwagen, den lokalen Bus, besuchten ein Baseballspiel, assen in diverse Restaurants und teiten uns auch immer das Casa Particulares. Auch in Santagio de Cuba lernten wir über eine Bekannschaft aus dem Camion Einheimische und Austauschstudenten aus Frankreich und Australien kennen, welche und viel tiefer in die Stadt eintauchen liessen. Von daher war Santiago auch eines der grossen Highlights meiner Kubareise.
Für mich persönlich haben sich die vier Wochen Kuba mehr als gelohnt, doch seit meiner Zeit in Mexico und Guatemala hörte ich auch von vielen, dass Ihnen Kuba nicht wirklich gefallen hatte. Oftmals waren Sie aber auch nur kurz und ebenfalls nur in den grossen Touristenorten unterwegs. Doch es ist auch nicht ein Land für jeden Geschmack, doch genau das machts aus! Kuba ist einzigartig!
It’s already more than two months ago as my Cuba adventure ended up. Time to look back on my four weeks in Cuba. My Cuba travel was not always easy, partially also rather expensive, in relation to the income of a cubans. It’s clear that the goverment earn a lot of moneyhere with the tourism. But this money is also necessary, next to sugarcane, rum & tobacco Cuba does not have many export products. And also many products needs to be imported. Lots of electrical appliances from China, partly packaged foods like tuna and noodelsoups. Food from Spain can be found also often in the numerous little foodstores. But the variety of shops makes the shopping not easier, rather complicated. Because they often have only a few products and as good as never fresh ones. When you looking for vegetables, fruits, cheese, eggs or meat, you have to go for thode on the markets or by them from the street sellers. However, in Cuba always and easy to find were rum, beer & cigars. Despite these hurdles finds time after some time well cope and recognizes the well as the good cafés and restaurants. For example, while my last days in Habana, I noticed the Café baracoa which is only open for lunchtime. There I eat on my penultimate day in Cuba and it was super delicious. Costs has a large portion of Rice with vegetables, pork, potatoes and cucumbers only 1.20 USD looking back I would say it was smart to start my latinamerika adventure in Cuba. It was for sure a leap into the cold water, because backpacking in Cuba is not easy, without good spanish even more. But I also had luck, because I met great people with whom I many of my impressions could share. The most valuable acquaintances were my two travelbuddies Brandon & Kevin from Canada, with them I almost traveled two weeks across Cuba. We drove together train, camions, motorbike taxis, horses carriage, the local bus, visited a baseball game, eaten into various restaurants and shared the same Casa particulares. Also in Santagio de Cuba we met though a backpacker from the camion locals and exchange students from France and Australia. Through them now we felt much deeper into the city life. Therefore was Santiago also one of the big highlights of my cuba trip. Personally for me were the four weeks Cuba more than worth the visit. But since my time in Mexico and Guatemala I heard also by many other, that they didn’t really like backpacking in Cuba. Often they were only there for a short time and mostly in the big tourist areas. Sure it is also not a country for everyone, but just find out! Cuba is unique!
