Nach meiner Zeit in Bacalar stand die erste Nachbusreise in Mexico auf dem Programm. Und zwar ging es Abends ca. Um 20:00 Uhr mit dem ersten Bus für knapp eine Stunde nach Chetumal. Die Grenzstadt zu Belize und ebenfalls die Hauptstadt des Bundesdtaates Quintana Roo in welchem im die letzten 5 Wochen unterwegs war. Doch hiess es wsrten auf den Nachtbus nach Palenque, welcher dann mit über einer Stunde verspähtung um ca. 00:15 Uhr losfuhr. Gute 7 Stunden dauerte die Fahrt, eine Stunde Zeitverschiebung inklusive. Morgen früh nach 6 Uhr kurz nach Sonnenaufgang traffen wir dann in Palenque ein. Die Fahrt war relativ angenehm und bequem doch schlafen konnte ich trotzdem nicht.
So war also der este meiner zwei geplanten Tage in Palenque ein Faulenzer und Schlaftag.
Am zweiten gings dann aber auf zu dem berühmten Maya Ruinen im Jungel. Palenque war eine grosse Mayastadt welche sich über mehrere Quadratkilometer erstreckte. Bis heute ist sind nur die wichtigsten Gebäude fed Stadtkern ausgegraben. Die rest der Stadt lässt sich duch geführte Touren oder auf eigene Faust im Jungle endecken.
Nach einem spannenden zweiten Tag gings aber am nächsten Morgen weiter. Dieses mal wieder mit einem Collectivo-Taxi und zwar zuerst für knapp 3h nach Ocosingo und von da mit einem anderen weiter nach San Cristobal de las Casas.
Diese Stadt mit überschaubarem Zentrum wurde vor fast 500 Jahren gegründet und befinded sich im Hochland vom Chiapas auf 2100m über Meer. Die Bevölkerung beträgt über 150’000. Leider wurde ich ich hier von fiesen Darmbakterien in Bett verfrachtet und konnte daher während meiner 8 Nächte nicht wirklich viel unternehmen. Doch ich besuchte den eindrücklichen Cañon del Sumidero Canyon und die sehr spezielle Kirche in Chamula und natürlich die lokalen Märkte, welche in jeder Destination bisher den Besuch wert waren.
Am Dienstag 17. Januar 2017 früh morgens um 06:00 Uhr hiess es dann: Guatemala ich komme! Ich habe mir einen direkten Shuttleservice nach San Pedro de Laguna am Lago de Atitlàn gebucht. Wie diese abenteuerliche Reise war erzähle ich im nächsten Blogeintrag.
After my time in Bacalar the first nightbus in Mexico was ahead. In the evening, around 8pm we went with the first bus for almost an hour to Chetumal. The border town to Belize and also the capital of the federal province Quintana Roo, where I wandered around in the last 5 weeks. As we waited for the nightbus to Palenque, the announced that this one is delayed. With more than an hour delayed around 00:15 clock the bus finally left. Around 7 hours was the trip, an hour time shift included. In the morning after six o’clock and shortly after sunrise we arrived im Palenque. The ride was relatively comfortable but I could not sleep anyway.
So the first day of my planned two days in Palenque was a lazy and sleepy day.
On the second we went to the famous Mayan ruins in the jungle. Palenque was a large Maya city which stretched over several square kilometers. Today, only the most important buildings were excavated around the central city center. The rest of the city can be discoverd by guided tours or on your own in Jungle.
After an exciting second day, I left Palenque the next morning. This time again with a Collectivo taxi and first for about 3 hours to Ocosingo and from there with another one to San Cristobal de las Casas.
This city with a manageable center was founded almost 500 years ago and is located in the upland of Chiapas on 2100m above sea level. The population is over 150,000. Unfortunately, I was forced to stay in bed most of my time here by a nasty bactirical intestinal infections. Therefore I could not really do much during my 8 nights. But I visited the impressive Cañon del Sumidero Canyon and the very special church in Chamula and of course the local markets, which were worth visiting in every destination so far.
On tuesday, 17 January 2017 early in the morning at 06:00am I was ready to say: Guatemala I’m coming! I booked a direct shuttle service to San Pedro de Laguna at Lago de Atitlàn. How this adventurous journey was, will I tell you in the next blog entry.
