Wow! Was für eine Trip, was für ein Erlebnis, 74h voller Abenteuer und Eindrücken die man durch die deutlich schneller Flugverbindung nie erlebt hätte.

So geniesst man eine Karibikinsel gleich doppelt!

We made it! Together with Dave & Ella from Canada, I traveled overland and over the sea in 74 hours from Popoyo on the Pacific coast to Big Corn Island in the Caribbean.

The Corn Islands are about 80km from the Nigaraguan Caribbean coast and are politically part of Nicaragua. The population is mostly of African descent and speaks mostly English.

The adventure started on Tuesday morning at 10:00 am at the Playa Guadacate in Popoyo. First stopover was for lunch at Rosi in Rivas.
This was followed by a shopping at the local market and the onward journey to Managua. The plan was to take a night bus directly to Bluefields to catch the ferry to Big Corn on Wednesday morning. But that was nothing, because this night bus no longer gabs and so we had once across Managua to the other bus terminal and the night bus to El Rama to catch. Of course, rush hour and the streets were crammed. But it had still folded and at 21:30 clock with 30 minutes late, the trip started. And it was the worst bus of my whole journey. We got the last row and as the rear door was broken also the whole wind in the face. Argh! At 4am we arrived tired im El Rama and tried unsuccessfully to buy tickets for the first boat at 5:30 am to Bluefields.

So it was nothing with the ferry at 09:00 clock and so we stayed an extra night in El Rama and then climbed on Thursday evening a small cargo ship that brought us directly to Big Corn. The crossing through the river and then over the sea took a whopping 17 hours, luckily we were able to sleep well enough, even though the sleeping situation left much to be desired.

At 12 o’clock on Friday morning we reached the island with great relief. Wow! What a trip, what an experience, 74h full of adventure and impressions you would never have experienced through the much faster flight connection.

So you enjoy a Caribbean island twice!
