Am Tag davor irgendwann nach 22:00 Uhr entschied ich mich den Acatenangohike zu machen. Morgens um 07:30 Uhr habe ich die Tour im Hostel gebucht und um 08:30 Uhr wurde ich bereits abgeholt.
Sehr spontan also, und dies obwohl dieser Hike unter den Backpackers in Guatemala ein must-do ist. Grund dafür war die Wettervorhersage, diese war nicht so super und sogar Gewitter wurden angemeldet.
Nachdem die ganze Gruppe in Antigua zusammengesammelt wurde gings zum Essen, Schlafsack, Matte und Zelt fassen etwas ausserhalb von Antigua. Ebenfalls waren 4l Wasser pflicht und somit war das ganze Gepäck um die 15kg schwer.
Mit einem alten Schulbus gings dann an den Fuss des Vulkans auf 2200m. Von hier hiess es dann laufen. Um 10:45 Uhr liefen wir los. In unserer Gruppe waren wir knapp 20 Leute, aus mehreren Ländern. Nach einigen kurzen Pausen und einem Mittagessen Stopp erreichten wir nach 5h das Camp für die Nacht auf ca. 3700m. die Zelte waren schnell aufgebaut und nach Sonnenuntergang gabs auch bereits das Abendessen. Diese war eine simple Fertig-Noodlesuppe.
Nicht zu vernachlässigen ist der Nachbar Vulkan Fuego, welcher von unserem Camp nur 4km Luftlinie entfernt ist. Dieser ist nämlich einer der aktivsten Vulkane in Zentralamerika. In den letzten paar nächten hat er mehrmals Lava gespuckt und auch während dem wir unsere Zelte aufbauten spuckte er eine beeindruckende Aschewolke aus.
Leider war in unserer Nacht das Glück nicht auf unserer Seite, wie sahen keine Lava und auch den Vulkan aufgrund von den Wolken nicht allzu oft.
Dafür war die Kombination von Vollmond, Wolkenmeer und ein Gewittersturm in der Ferne eine grad so eindrückliche Entschädigung.
Um ca. 21 Uhr gings für mich ins Bett. Am nächsten Morgen gings bereits um 04:00 Uhr wieder auf die Beine. Der Gipfel zum Sonnenaufgang stand an. Der Aufstieg in der Dunkelheit und im Wolkennebel war sehr speziell und einmalig. Doch der Sonnenaufgang blieb uns verwehrt, eine Wolkendecke versperrte die Sicht. Kurz nach halb Sieben öffnete sich diese und wir bekammen etwas vom Vulkan und von der Sonne zu Gesicht.
Wieder zurück beim Camp gabs Frühstück und danach wurden die Zelte zusammengepackt und um 0845 der Abstieg in Angriff genommen. Nach kurzen Pausen und nur 2.5h war dieser bereits geschafft. Zurück nach Antigua gings dann wieder mit dem Schulbus.
Ein unvergässliches Erläbnis was ich jedem der nach Guatemala reist empfehlen kann. Streng, anspruchsvoll aber jeden Schweisstropfen wert!
On the day before somewhen after 10pm I decided to do the Acatenango hike. The next morning at 07:30 am I booked the tour in the hostel and around 08:30 pm, I was already picked up. Very spontaneously, although this hike among the backpackers in Guatemala is a must-do. The reason for this was the weather forecast, that one was not so great and even thunderstorm were logged in.
After the whole group was picked up in Antigua we went to grap food, sleeping bags, mats and tents somewhere outside of Antigua. Also 4l water were duty and so the whole luggage was around 15kg. With an old school bus we went then at the base of the volcano on 2200m. From here we had to walk. At 10:45am we started hiking. In our group we were nearly 20 people of several countries. After a few short breaks and a lunch stop we reached in 5h the camp for the night on approximately 3700m. The tents were quickly established and after sunset we ate dinner. That was a simple instant-noodlesoup.
Not negligible is the neighbor volcano Fuego, which is only 4km awaz from our camp. This is one of the most active volcanoes in Central America. In the last couple of nights, it has several times spat lava and also during the time we builted our tents it spat an impressive ash cloud. Unfortunately was in that night the luck not on our site as we saw no lava and also the volcano due to the clouds not all too often. But the combination of full moon, cloud sea and a lightning storm in the distance were almost so impressive.
Approximately 21 pm I went to bed. The next morning we went already at 04:00 pm back to hiking. The summit to sunrise was the goal. The rise in the darkness and in the fog of the clouds was very special and unique. But the sunrise remained us denied, a cloud cover obstructed the view. Shortly after half seven opened this one and we saw something from the volcano and the sun for a little moment.
Returned at the camp we ate breakfast and then the tents were packed up and around 0845am we started our way down. After short breaks and only 2.5h was this already done. Back to Antigua we went then again with the school bus.
A unforgetable experience which I can recommend to everyone who travels to Guatemala. Hard, challenging, but worth every sweat drop!
